I have to be careful what I say. Don't you wish everyone else would watch what they said as well? We tend to dwell on foul language and off colored jokes but what about negative words that lead us into an area of living where we do not belong?
Ephesians 4:29
"Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment that it may give grace to those who hear."
Paul encourages us not to say anything that is unwholesome or that does not edify someone. If we truly took this scripture to heart, many of our conversations would be cut out during the course of our normal day. Some of us would have nothing to talk about or anything to say.
But is that a bad thing?
You always heard mom say, "If you can't say anything good about someone don't say anything". Straight from the pen of Paul. I need to watch what I say today. Not just about other people but I don't need to say these words about myself. I don't need to proclaim that I am tired because I might just start believing it. I don't need to say that I am not feeling well because my body just might hear me say it and start shutting down.
I don't need to say that I am depressed, defeated, or disgusted because my frame of mind will cause me to start living in that way. Notice that Paul didn't say not to let these words be heard by others, he said don't even let them come out of your mouth. Whether you are in a crowd or when you find yourself all alone. You may not think anyone is listening, but HE is!
Prayer:
"Lord, control the words that come out of my mouth today. Help me not to say one thing that doesn't please you. Help me to build others up and not tear them down, including myself"
